Home / Car Care / R-1234yf vs. R-134a: Which Refrigerant Does Your Car Use?
Air Conditioning

If you’ve looked into an A/C repair lately, you may have run into two names: R-134a and R-1234yf. They’re the two refrigerants used in modern vehicles — and knowing which one your car uses matters more than you’d think.

The short history

For decades, most vehicles used R-134a refrigerant. Then, to meet stricter environmental standards, the industry shifted to R-1234yf, which has a far lower global-warming impact. Most vehicles built from around 2013 onward use R-1234yf, though the changeover happened gradually, so there’s some overlap depending on the make and model.

How to tell which one you have

The easiest way is to check the A/C label under the hood — it lists the refrigerant type and the correct charge amount. As a rough rule of thumb, a newer vehicle almost certainly uses R-1234yf, and an older one uses R-134a. If you’re not sure, we can identify it for you in seconds.

Why the difference matters

The two refrigerants are not interchangeable. They use different fittings, different equipment, and different handling procedures — you can’t simply top up an R-1234yf system with R-134a. R-1234yf also requires specialized recovery and recharge equipment that many smaller shops haven’t invested in, which is why some places can’t service newer vehicles at all.
