Why Your Windshield Fogs Up in Winter (and What Fixes It)

Your windshield fogs because the air inside the car is holding more moisture than the cold glass can tolerate — and the fastest fix is dry air, not hot air. That’s why the defrost setting on most vehicles quietly runs the A/C compressor even in January. If yours isn’t clearing the glass, that’s usually where the problem is.

Why it fogs in the first place

You breathe, your wet boots and coat evaporate, snow melts off the floor mats, and all of it goes into the cabin air as moisture. When that air touches glass that’s at –10°C, it condenses, the same way a cold drink sweats in July. The more moisture in the car and the colder the glass, the faster it fogs.

What defrost actually does

Turning on defrost does three things at once: it routes air to the windshield vents, it turns the heat up, and on nearly every vehicle built in the last twenty-five years it engages the A/C compressor. The compressor is what dries the air — it pulls moisture out as the air passes over the cold evaporator, then the heater core warms that dry air before it reaches the glass. Warm, dry air clears fog in seconds. Warm, wet air just moves it around.

So if your defrost has slowly got worse over a season or two, the likely reason is that the A/C system has lost its charge or the compressor isn’t engaging. Things that make it worse

• Recirculation on. That button keeps the same wet air going round. For defogging, fresh air in, always.
• A clogged cabin air filter. Restricts airflow to the glass. It’s cheap and often overdue.
• Wet floor mats. Rubber winter mats that you can tip out beat carpet mats that hold a litre of melted slush.
• A dirty inside windshield. The film that builds up on the inside of the glass gives fog something to cling to. Clean it properly once in the fall.
• A leak. If the car fogs constantly, even parked, water is getting in somewhere — a door seal, the trunk, or a heater core weeping coolant (that one has a sweet smell and leaves a greasy film). The heater core is a cooling-system repair.

Wipers and washer fluid

Summer washer fluid freezes in the reservoir and the lines — usually the first time you need it, on a salty highway with the sun low. Switch to a winter fluid rated to at least –35°C before the first frost, and run the summer stuff out first rather than mixing. Winter wiper blades have a rubber boot over the frame so ice can’t build up in the joints and lift the blade off the glass; on a winter of salt spray they’re worth the small cost. And lift the blades off the glass when freezing rain is forecast, or you’ll tear them when you free them.

No heat at all?

If the air from the vents is cold, the A/C isn’t the problem — the cooling system is. Low coolant, a stuck thermostat or a clogged heater core are the usual causes, and a thermostat stuck open also costs fuel. Our cooling system page explains what we check.

Common questions

Should I use the A/C button in winter?

Yes, with the heat up. That’s all the defrost setting is doing anyway. Running the A/C for a few minutes every couple of weeks through the winter also keeps the compressor seals from drying out.

Why does the rear window clear but not the front?

The rear window has an electric grid heater; the front relies on airflow. If the front won’t clear, it’s airflow, moisture or the A/C.

Do anti-fog sprays work?

Somewhat, on a clean window. They don’t fix an A/C that isn’t drying the air.
