Car Care

Brakes are the one system on your vehicle you never want to gamble with — and the good news is they almost always warn you before they fail. Here are six signs it’s time to get them checked.

1. Squealing or squeaking

Many brake pads have a built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab that squeals when the pads get thin. If you hear a persistent high-pitched squeak when braking, it’s usually your brakes telling you the pads are near the end of their life.

2. Grinding

A harsh grinding sound is more serious. It often means the pads are completely worn and metal is contacting metal — which can quickly damage your rotors and turn a routine pad replacement into a much bigger bill. Don’t put this one off.

3. A soft or spongy pedal

If the brake pedal sinks farther than usual or feels soft underfoot, it can point to air or moisture in the brake lines, worn components, or a fluid problem. Your pedal should feel firm — anything mushy is worth checking.

4. Pulsing or vibration

A pedal or steering wheel that pulses or shudders when you brake often means warped rotors. Beyond being annoying, it reduces how effectively you can stop.

5. Pulling to one side

If your vehicle pulls left or right when you brake, one side of the braking system may be wearing unevenly or sticking. It affects control, especially in an emergency stop.

6. Longer stopping distances or a warning light

If it’s taking noticeably longer to stop, or a brake warning light is on, have it looked at right away. These are clear signals not to wait.

The bottom line

Worn pads left too long can wreck your rotors and drive the cost up fast. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, bring your vehicle in — we’ll inspect the whole system, tell you exactly what we find, and if your brakes are fine, we’ll tell you that too.
